Kaidan In A Bow - Merry Christmas Sweeties!

Okay, he's not really in a bow, at least not that I can show you.  You'll have to imagine that one. :)

No licking the screen!  (Unless nobody is looking...)
But I DO have a Kaidan gift for you!  I've written a 20 page scene from Sweet Peril from Kaidan's point of view.  If you have not yet read book two, this will be a huge spoiler.  Also, please know that I did not censor Kaidan's thoughts in this scene, so if you're wary of bad language and sexual references you might want to skip this one. I'd say it's still upper-YA appropriate, though.

A little about the writing style - I write a character's voice the way it comes to me. This one came like a stream of consciousness in present tense (which I never write in, so it was strange). I never know what Kai's got in store for me.

Before I share, I want to remind you to please drop by the Epic Reads site to vote for Anna and Kaidan in the Best Couple category of the Book Shimmy Awards!!! You can vote every day.  :)  I'm thrilled that they've made it this far.

Moving on...so, you want to read this aforementioned Kaidan scene, eh?  Well, here's what you need to do.  Look up, up, up to the top of this page.  Click on "Extras" and it will take you to all of my Bonus Material.

Enjoy!!!

Big holiday hugs,

Sweet Holiday Gift Ideas

This post is totally just for fun.  I wanted to showcase some silly stuff, and I wanted to let you know about some awesome people who make book goodies that are worthy of a place on your Christmas list (or birthday list, or whatever holiday you might be celebrating!)  Also, at the end of this post I wanted to update you on some upcoming things to look out for in December!  :)

1)  Okay, so, funny tidbit...Kaidan's pheromones weren't just random smells I threw together on a whim. Nope, I actually based his scent on a cologne that makes me weak in the knees.  It has the sweetness of oranges, the zing of lime, and a masculine woodsy undertone that makes me swoon. You may smell something different when you whiff it at the sales counter, but that is what I imagine.  I would spritz my husband with this every day if he wasn't anti-cologne - boo!
So if you want your man to smell like Kaidan, buy him some Clinique Happy for Men.  Yeah, baby.

2)  Seeing as how I'm so unoriginal, when it came time for Anna's pheromones to be revealed by the naughty Kai, I chose another one of my favorite scents - Pear Glace from Victoria's Secret.  They used to make a lovely Freesia scent, as well, but that's been discontinued.  (Anna's scent is pears and freesia.)
If you'd like to smell like Anna Whitt, getcha some of this!

3)  Apparently I need to scent all of my characters!  In my novella, Flirting with Maybe, the girl Ryan is in love with (Brooke) smells like vanilla cupcakes and frosting and all sorts of edible yumminess.  He later finds out it's her vanilla lotion, and this is the one I had in mind - Vanilla Bean Noel from Bath and Body Works.  I have to stock up on this every year because it's only out at this time!  By the way, if you plan to read Flirting with Maybe, be sure to check out the epilogue afterward right here on my blog under "Extras." (wink, wink)

4)  I cannot shout the praises of Vivianne Hebel loudly enough. She runs HebelDesign, and she makes amazing jewelry and book goodies for many popular YA series, including the Sweet Trilogy!
  • She makes a red leather bracelet that says "I'm With The Drummer," which I wear to all my signings.
  • She makes the turquoise heart that Kaidan gives Anna in Sweet Evil.
  • She makes the angel necklace Anna gives Patti for Christmas in Sweet Peril.
  • She makes aura necklaces and rings to order, with any colors you like, be it lusty red or pink for love.
  • She makes custom quote nickel bookmarks with a tiny angel wing and piece of turquoise that dangle.
There's something for everyone at this online shop!  I love her stuff, and Vivi is a joy to work with. :)

5)  This one blows me away.  A wonderful reader named Ephrielle, who has an Etsy shop, makes her own Barbie doll dresses by hand.  She makes one for Sweet Evil and Sweet Peril (and possibly Sweet Reckoning in the future).  How adorable is this???  They're on my own wish list for sure!!

6)  Another Etsy shop that I think is really cool is this one, which does engraved drumsticks!!  I'm SO getting some that say "Kaidan Rowe" to display in my fancy future office.  Check them out here - I'm amazed by how inexpensive they are, too!  This particular set belongs to Nyrae Dawn, and I'm a teensy jealous.  Good think I love her so much.

7)  My last gift idea comes to you from Cara's Bookish Charms on Etsy.  Cara is Irish, and imagine my shock when she sent me a package out of the blue with the most adorable bookish swag imaginable!  She made my all-time favorite Kaidan and Anna necklace, which I wear to all my signing events.  I'm in love with the antique look and feel of it!  She'll pretty much make anything for you, and it's well worth the money.

Have fun making your wish lists this holiday season!!!  Big hugs, everyone.

UPCOMING SWEET STUFF:

* Be on the lookout soon for ARC Tweetstakes (ARC flash giveaways on Twitter).  This will generally happen in the evening, around 9PM Eastern U.S. time.  Since these ARCs are being mailed by the publisher the contest can only be for U.S. and Canada.

** During the first week of December I plan to do an international Sweet Reckoning ARC and book goodie giveaway, including a signed ARC of White Hot Kiss by Jennifer Armentout!  That will be right here on my blog.

*** Around Christmas time I am giving all of you a present.  I'm working on a scene from Sweet Peril from Kaidan's point of view (think bits and pieces from chapters 17-20).  I'll put it up on my blog for free.  Because you're the best and I love you lots.

Birth of an Idea...or Two!

Book ideas are funny things.  It usually starts with one small idea for me, and then as I ask myself questions, layer upon layer is added and the idea grows.  Generally my ideas seem to come out of nowhere.  I can be sitting on the couch, doing dishes, half asleep in bed, driving the car, you name it -- and BAM.  Something hits me.  Then my eyes glaze over as I begin to play around with it and creating ensues.  Not every idea gets written.  Sometimes it fades away.  Sometimes I write a few pages to get it out of my system, and the inspiration snuffs out.  But when an idea sticks, I try to run with it.

I've recently had two very different ideas.  One, a YA contemporary romance, hit me out of nowhere in a complete blurb. I will share it with you, but please don't add it to Goodreads or anything like that, because there's no guarantees in this business. Remember, this is a working blurb, just for fun.  I probably shouldn't even share it, but oh, what the heck...

Blurb for KISS COLLECTOR:
All around her, seventeen-year-old Zae Monroe sees boys using girls for their own pleasures. After being cheated on by the only guy she’s ever loved, and then watching her parents' marriage crumble, she becomes anti-love and pro-fun. It’s time to turn the tables on the stupid boys of the world. It’s time for girls to be a little selfish and take what they want. Zae's preferred pleasure happens to be kissing. Athletes, musicians, poets, and potheads--their lips are all on her agenda. When she and her best friends have a contest to see who can kiss the most boys during the summer before their senior year, Zae keeps her eye on the prize while the other girls fall left and right for their victims. It's not until the sweet guy from her English class rejects her drunken advances at a party that she gains perspective on the reasons behind her boy hatred, and starts to wonder if she wasn't wrong about the male race...or at least one of them.
I sent this blurb to my writing bestie/first beta reader, Nyrae Dawn, and she was like, "OMG! I love this! Write it!"  But I'm weird.  So weird.  I was glad to have the idea, but I wasn't ready to write it.  The layers weren't piling on the way I needed.

Plus, I'll be honest...I'd been experiencing a major lack of confidence in my writing and the publication process at the beginning of the fall.  I'd taken the summer off, and I just couldn't seem to get back into it.  Totally a mental thing.  Writer's Block, if you will.  Terrible stuff.

But I missed writing.  I started to freak out and get sad because I wanted to write, but nothing was speaking to me the way I needed.  I need to have an idea shout at me, and not leave me alone.  That's my idea of inspiration.  I was tired of sitting around waiting for an idea, so I decided to take matters into  my own hands.

There seem to be a lot of fairy tale retellings lately.  I wasn't feeling inspired by any of the usual, well-known stories, but I was wondering if a more obscure fairy tale might spark an idea for me.  So I went to the basement and dusted off my old copy of Grimm's Complete Fairy Tales.  I bought the big book years ago, trying to be all literary and cool, but quickly realized the tales were a bit too dark for me.  There seems to be some horrific twist in all of the stories, and though I appreciate horror writing, I am not geared toward that writing myself.

I opened up to the Contents page and began looking through the story titles.  One caught my eye: "The Singing Bone."  Ooh, intriguing, huh?  So I flipped to that page and voila!  I read the first two paragraphs, and my brain seemed to swell and spin.  I didn't even care what the rest of the story said.  An idea had taken root, big and fat in my imagination, and I felt the familiar buzz of inspiration.  Of course, I read the rest of the story, but true to the Grimm's format I was disturbed by the tale!  So, when I say this story idea was inspired by "The Singing Bone," I'm only talking about the introduction to the tale.  I'm a romance writer, after all.  :)

I began writing this story (again, please don't add to Goodreads!) - It's a YA fantasy/magical realism romance which I'm calling THE GREAT HUNT, and you'll never believe what happened.  That other story, the contemporary one about smooching, totally came bursting to life and butted in!  Suddenly I had two strong ideas vying for my attention.  For the first time ever I have two differing works-in-progress, but strangely it's working for me.  I'm taking turns writing both HUNT and KISS.  Here's a fun bonus - my beta readers and my agent adore both stories!  I'm still only in the early-ish stages, but I am loving them!  It's a joy to be writing for fun with no pressure of a deadline or contract.  However, if a publisher wants one I will welcome the pressure.  Bring it!  :)

I hope to have more info for you soon, but I wanted to let you know what's up with me these days since I've been so quiet.  In other news, I have a HUGE holiday giveaway coming in November (including SWEET RECKONING ARCs!!! - No, I don't have ARCs yet, but they should be ready soon!)

For those of you who are curious, here is an online version I found of the story I mentioned.  A little creepiness just in time for Halloween.  :-)  Big hugs!  I love y'all!

"The Singing Bone"

by Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm

(The Brothers Grimm)

Once upon a time in a certain country there was great concern about a wild boar that was destroying the peasants' fields, killing the cattle, and ripping people apart with its tusks. The king promised a large reward to anyone who could free the land from this plague, but the beast was so large and strong that no one dared to go near the woods where it lived. Finally the king proclaimed that whoever could capture or kill the wild boar should have his only daughter in marriage.
Now in this country there lived two brothers, sons of a poor man. They declared that they dared to attempt the task. The older one, who was crafty and shrewd, did so out of pride. The younger one, who was innocent and simple, did so because of his kind heart.
The king said, "In order to be more sure of finding the beast, you should enter the woods from opposite sides."
Thus the older one entered the woods from the west, and the younger one from the east.
After the younger one had walked a little while, a little dwarf stepped up to him. He held a black spear in his hand and said, "I am giving you this spear because your heart is innocent and good. With it you can confidently attack the wild boar. It will do you no harm."
He thanked the dwarf, put the spear on his shoulder, and walked on fearlessly.
Before long he saw the beast. It attacked him, but he held the spear toward it, and in its blind fury it ran into the spear with such force that its heart was slashed in two.
Then he put the monster on his back and turned towards home, intending to take it to the king.
Emerging from the other side of the woods, he came to a house where people were making merry drinking wine and dancing. His older brother was there too. Thinking that the boar would not run away from him any time soon, he had decided to drink himself some real courage. When he saw his younger brother coming out of the woods with his booty, his envious and evil heart gave him no peace.
He called out to him, "Come in, dear brother. Rest and refresh yourself with a beaker of wine."
The younger brother, suspecting no evil, went in and told him about the good dwarf who had given him the spear with which he had killed the boar.
The older brother kept him there until evening, and then they set forth together. After dark they came to a bridge over a brook, and the older brother let the younger one go first. When the younger brother reached the middle above the water, the older one gave him such a blow from behind that he fell down dead.
He buried him beneath the bridge, took the boar, and delivered it to the king, pretending that he had killed it. With this he received the king's daughter in marriage.
When his younger brother did not return he said, "The boar must have ripped him apart," and every one believed it.
But as nothing remains hidden from God, this black deed was also to come to light.
After many long years a shepherd was driving his herd across the bridge and saw a little snow-white bone lying in the sand below. Thinking that it would make a good mouthpiece, he climbed down, picked it up, and then carved out of it a mouthpiece for his horn. When he blew into it for the first time, to his great astonishment the bone began to sing by itself:
Oh, my dear shepherd,
You are blowing on my little bone.
My brother killed me,
And buried me beneath the bridge,
To get the wild boor
For the daughter of the king.
"What a wonderful horn," said the shepherd. "It sings by itself. I must take it to the king."
When he brought it before the king, the horn again began to sing its little song. The king understood it well, and had the earth beneath the bridge dug up. Then the whole skeleton of the murdered man came to light.
The wicked brother could not deny the deed. He was sewn into a sack and drowned alive. The murdered man's bones were laid to rest in a beautiful grave in the churchyard.

End of Summer Teaser: SWEET RECKONING

What a crazy summer!  I am so ready to get back to writing.  I've done lots of editing this summer, but I'm ready to create something new.  And I actually have a pretty solid idea that I'm thrilled to begin!  Many YAYS!

Here's a fun little snippet from SWEET RECKONING, coming April 29th, 2014.  This teaser is typical Kaidan Rowe.  *sigh*  I hope you'll enjoy.  Happy end of summer, y'all.  Big hugs to you.
I laid back the lounge chair and rolled to my stomach, content.Sounds of splashing faded as I dozed. And then I heard a beautiful voice. . . . “Cover your arse, and nobody gets hurt.”
I lifted my head to see Kaidan crouched next to me. He was here! Just as I was about to get up and throw my arms around him, his gaze slid down my body to my butt and stayed there. Hello, stormy eyes.I felt twice as hot under the sun as I had one minute ago.I threw the towel over my body, which forced his eyes back to mine.
“Hey,” I whispered.
He touched my face, and I leaned into his palm. “I feel like it’s been a year since I saw you,” he said softly. “I’ve missed you.”
I reached up and cupped his hand. “I’ve missed you, too.”
“But you’re still in trouble.” His voice was low and gravelly.

Tough Author Decisions (Re: SEE ME)

Hi everyone.
I'm sad today.
I've had to make a difficult decision.

I'm putting my project, See Me, on hold.

Yes, I love this book.  It's my Irish fantasy that has magical people, leprechauns, and faeries.  It's the story my mom read out loud to my grandmother on her deathbed, and even though my grandmother couldn't open her eyes, she would chuckle at funny parts and remind my mom where she left off after breaks.

See Me was fun to write. In my mind and heart I know exactly how the story is supposed to feel...but getting that feeling across on paper is not always easy.  Sometimes it doesn't convey well enough for my liking.  For years I've felt that the story needs something.  Not just minor tweaks or changes, but something big.  Something dealing with the pacing of the plot and romance.  It's just "off" to me.  But no matter how long I ponder, the fix does not come to me.

This is why I decided to have a contest earlier in the summer to get beta readers.  I was hoping to get feedback that would spark a huge "AHA!" moment of clarity.  I got some amazingly helpful feedback about changes I can make to particular scenes, but as far as the overall storyline, I'm still drawing a blank.

Here's the thing.  Many of my beta readers (and my mom) are in love with this book.  They "get it."  They can see where I was trying to go with it, and they jumped on for the ride.  Those girls will probably be frustrated at my choice to shelf the project.  Others simply could not get into it.  At all.  And I respect their honesty.

When it comes down to it, what matters most is how the author feels about it, and I'm not confident.  Even if I were to revise based on all the feedback I've received, it would still be missing that big "something" in my mind.  Here's a visual for you.  Imagine a book is like a house. Reading it is like walking through the house, room to room, until you exit through the back door.  Well, right now my rooms are decorated cute, but the purpose for some of the rooms feels obscure.  I could go through and make adjustments to the rooms so they're more pleasing to the eye, but at the end it still feels like the house is not as beautiful, comfortable, or large as it could be.  It needs structural, foundational work.  It needs to have the walls torn down and the floors evened out, and the layout changed.  It needs to be bigger.  That kind of work is time consuming, and it requires the builder to have a very specific plan in mind.

I have no plan.  It's like my imagination is broken when it comes to this storyline.

I could throw my hands up and say, "It's good enough. Let's just put it out there. Some will love it."  But it feels wrong to do that.  As an author who values quality, I would regret it.  I know that no matter how good I think one of my books is, not everyone will agree; however, it's an author's confidence and love for a story that helps them not to be crushed by bad reviews.  Until I have that confidence I cannot consciously charge people for something I've written.

I really thought I could get it done this summer, and I surged forward with hope in my heart.  I got a lot of you very excited, and I hate leaving you hanging like this.  I'm open to publishing the story someday if inspiration for a proper revision hits me.  But for now, See Me is shelved.  I'm sorry.  Truly.

Now I'm going to take my children to the pool and try to release some of the anxiety that's been holding me captive.  Sometimes things don't work out the way we planned and it royally sucks.  All we can do is move forward.  I hope you'll move forward with me on this.

I want to thank Carrie McRae for her amazing, tireless volunteer work on the cover images.  I couldn't love them more!  I also want to thank Jenny, Samantha, Tiffany, Kayleigh, Luce, Julie, Maya, Jamie, and Brooke for beta reading!  I'm saving all of your notes for future use.  As to you, the readers, thank you for supporting me in my venture to self-publish.

Love and hugs,

Cover Reveal for My New YA, SEE ME!

This little book has been a long time coming.  I wrote it two years ago.  I've always had this sort of obsession with all things Irish, even though I've never been to Ireland.  Maybe it's because my birthstone is an emerald - I don't know.  But I love me some Emerald Isle.

A couple years ago when it seemed like every single mythological and fantasy creature ever known had been turned into a YA novel already, I got the giggles thinking about writing a book with leprechauns.  My husband was like, "Wendy. You cannot write a story with leprechauns.  They are not sexy.  Don't do it." When I pouted he proceeded to laugh at me.

Oh, snap.  Challenge accepted, buddy!

And so the wheels began turning in my wicked little brain.

Since I was starting the story with an unconventional type of creature, I wondered how much different I could make this book than anything else out there.  I wondered how much opposite I could make it from my own Sweet Trilogy books, and still love it.

Basically, this book started as a crazy challenge to myself.

And I fell in love.

I laughed until my sides hurt.

I wiped away some tears.

I swooned.

I hope you will, too.  But no pressure.  *hugs*

That being said, here is the cover and blurb for my stand-alone Magical Realism YA Romance with a dash of Fantasy... (wow, that was a mouthful)

Blurb:

While most seventeen-year-old American girls would refuse to let their parents marry them off to a stranger, Robyn Mason dreams of the mysterious McKale in Ireland, wondering how he’ll look and imagining his cute Irish accent. Prearranged bindings are common for magical families like her own, however when she travels to the whimsical Emerald Isle she discovers there’s more to her betrothal and McKale’s clan than she could have imagined.

What starts as an obligatory pairing between Robyn and McKale morphs over time into something they both need. But one giant obstacle stands the way of their budding romance: a seductive and deadly Fae princess accustomed to getting what she wants—and what she wants is McKale as her plaything. Love, desire, and jealousies collide as Robyn’s family and McKale’s clan must work together to outsmart the powerful Faeries and preserve the only hope left for their people.

Publication Date:  October 1st, 2013

And here is the gorgeous paperback jacket, which is the full picture!

Add See Me to your Goodreads Shelf!  :)

A HUGE "Thank You" to my talented and wonderful friend Carrie McRae for designing the cover!  And she's got one more image she's working on for the book.  SQUEE!  Can't wait for you to see!  If you'd like to support her, here are her social links:

Note * *
When my publisher passed on this book two months ago, I decided I would take the leap and self-publish.  This makes the availability a bit different from my other books, and it cannot be preordered.  The ebook will be available on Kindle, Nook, and probably Kobo for $3.99.  The paperback will only be available via Amazon and Createspace for $10.99.  I apologize for the limited availability.  This is a new adventure for me, and I'm glad to have my agent on board!

Thanks everyone for your continued love and support.  It means the world!

SEE ME Beta Readers!

First of all, a huge THANK YOU to the 200+ people who volunteered to beta read this book for me!  Doing a full book critique is a big job, and I was blown away by the number of people willing to help.  You all never cease to amaze me!  You've made me excited about a project that I was feeling down about - now I can't wait to begin my read-through and revisions next week!  And my friend Carrie is diligently working away on possible covers.  I'm loving the prettiness!!

As you can imagine, it was very hard to choose readers.  I wanted a diverse group of readers, both teens and adults, with and without critique experience, readers I know and those I don't.  There was really no rhyme or reason to why I chose those I did - it was sort of like the roll of a dice.  I was only going to choose 6-10, but I ended up with a dozen.

* *  If you have a star next to your name, please email me at wendyhigginswrites at gmail.com so I will have your email address on file when the story is ready in a couple weeks. (I've already been provided emails for the others.)

Once again, thank you.  I love you like crazy!

SWEET RECKONING Teaser #1!!!

As incentive for winning the first round of the 2013 YA Crush Tourney, I promised #TeamKaidan a teaser from book 3!  Now, y'all know I hate spoilers, and I'm pretty skimpy when it comes to teasers, so don't hate me too much for the short snippet.  We've got a long 10 month wait ahead of us, and I'm sure there will be plenty more little teasers to come!  :)

The next round of the Tourney is going to be hard, guys.  HARD.  Kaidan will be up against one of two book boys that I personally love.  Kaidan's next round will be Friday, July 12th against either Warner (from Shatter Me) or Will (from the Clockwork Angel series).  EEEK, right?!?!  I'm going to have to come up with a huge incentive for that one. . .

As promised, here is your teensy tease.  Thank you all so much for your continued support and SWEET love.  I want to give each of you a big squeezy hug!

*     *     *

I texted Kaidan, who was listed in my contacts under “James,” for James Bond. He’d chosen it. He had me listed as “Hot Chick From Gig.”
Video chat in 30.
His immediate response made me shake my head.
Clothing optional?
It was nice to know he could keep a sense of humor in the face of calamity. Or maybe he wasn’t joking...
“Are you two flirting?” Patti asked, her eyes darting to me from the road.
I blushed and deleted his message.

Update:  See Me beta readers will be chosen this week as soon as I get a chance (I'm at the beach with my family, yay!)  Be on the lookout for that post in a couple days.  Thanks for your patience!!

Crush Tourney and SEE ME Update

Hello lovelies!

First off, I have not had a chance to go through all of my comments and choose my beta readers yet.  I'm so very sorry for the delay, but this week has been insane with swim camp and preparing for our travels this weekend.  I promise to have my list of beta readers chosen within the week (I'm not accepting anymore entries, sorry).  I will let you know when the post is up!  :)  The response was so overwhelming that I had to close the comments/entries after two days!!!

Today is Kaidan's first round in the 2013 YA Crush Tourney!

I'm so excited for this year's tournament!!!  However, it's been brought to my attention that people have found ways to cheat and vote more than once.  Please be honest, guys.  There's no glory in an illegitimate win.  Vote once.  :-)

The tournament limited the number of pics our advocates were allowed to use, so Kayleigh put a post on her site with all the YUMMINESS here!

* * *   If Kaidan wins today, I will be releasing the very first teaser from Book 3 in The Sweet Trilogy, Sweet Reckoning!

I love you guys!  Thanks for everything!!!

Seeking Beta Readers for SEE ME!

UPDATE! June 25:  Due to receiving WAY more entries than expected, I'm going to shut the comments down today - that includes other social medias, so any entries received via other avenues will not be considered either - sorry!   I'll need a few days to sort through and decide (OMGosh - this is going to be so hard!!!)  I will post the chosen beta readers here on Friday.  Thank you so much, everyone!

Original Post:

Let's do this.

I know I said I wasn't going to work this summer, and technically I'm not writing something new...just revising. Plus, I'm expecting another round of edits for book 3 (Sweet Reckoning) soon, so I can't get out of all work 100%. But I promise I'm not working as much as normal. Not even close!  :)

Everything takes longer for me in the summer because I have my precious babies all day, every day, so I can only work at night and during the week of July while they're in camp.  Over the next three weeks I will be reading through my Irish fantasy, See Me, adding the new scene that I have in mind, and doing a general revision. I'm not changing any of the big stuff. I want to wait and see what my new beta readers say first.  To learn more about my new book, See Me, and find out what the heck we're talking about, read my post from yesterday.

The reader response to my last post was outstanding. You guys are so supportive and incredible - you always make me emotional!  Thank you.

I want a well-rounded group of beta readers, teens and adults, experienced critics/reviewers and unexperienced.  I honestly have no idea how I'll chose.  It might have to be a name draw, because the pressure is too much for me, lol.

What would be expected of you as a beta reader?
  • You would be emailed the manuscript/Word doc by July 15th, and you'd have approximately three weeks to provide feedback (I'd need it back the first week of August).  Please only enter if you're available during this timeframe.
  • You would be expected to give me your honest opinion about what you didn't like, what you'd prefer to see changed (if anything), and basically just your overall thoughts. I'm not looking for unwarranted praise. Only your complete honesty can help me improve the story. Don't worry about hurting my feelings. :)
  • You could not, under any circumstances, share the story with anyone else or I would be very sadface.

If you are interested in reading See Me and providing feedback which will help me revise, please answer the following questions in the comment section of this blog post (people reading this on Goodreads will need to visit my actual blog to comment - comments made on Goodreads will not be considered):

1) Your first name
2) Are you a teen or an adult (18+)?
3) Have you ever done a full book critique/beta read for anyone?

I will post my list of beta readers this Friday, June 28th, so check back then!!!  *big, squeezy hugs*

The Decline of Paranormal and My Predicament

I know I said I wouldn't be blogging much this summer, but something has come up that I want to talk to y'all about...

Starting last year, publishers began picking up less paranormal and more contemporary.  Personally, I believe this is because they're trying to battle the massive amount of reasonably priced self-pubished pieces out there (the vast majority of which are contemporaries).  It could also be because there was so much paranormal written in a few short years that it's becoming harder to keep things new and original.  Whatever the reason, paranormal is on a major decline.

As many of you know, the 2nd and 3rd books in my Sweet Trilogy almost weren't picked-up last year.  Sales for Sweet Evil had only been "okay."  Now, because of you incredibly dedicated readers, sales for Sweet Peril were up 86% in the first five weeks of sales over Sweet Evil's first five weeks.  You. Guys. Freaking. Rock.  Thank you for making HarperTeen's gamble a win for all!!

That being said, my agent and I recently submitted another story (an urban fantasy romance set in Ireland) and it was rejected.  I'm actually not at all upset or bitter about this, because I knew it was a very different story and it was a long shot.  And while there were things they loved about it, it might be a bit too far out of the norm for comfort.  Also, I was told once again that paranormal/fantasy YA sales are down.  Publishers are a business, and it's not always good to take risks.

So, now my agent and I are stuck with this wee little story on our hands, wondering what to do.  I have a funny feeling that if we submit it to other publishers, we'll get much of the same response.  There's always self-publishing, yes.  But there are things about this novel that I'm unsure of.  There's one aspect of the plot that made both the publisher and my agent nervous.  Naturally I'm second-guessing this element now.  Do I take it out?  Change it?  Leave it?  I don't know...

I have an idea, but I want to test the waters and see if you guys are game.  I'm considering having a contest in which several "winners" would be chosen to be beta-readers of the book.  Said beta-readers would provide feedback that will help me to decide which direction I'll go with the story.  (It feels really arrogant of me to say that "winners" will get to read my possibly sucky story. Like, "Congratulations! You get to help me for free and you might not even like it!"  Lol, wow.  I apologize for using you in this way.)  All of my personal beta-readers have read it, and the overall feedback from them has been incredible.  But it would be beneficial to have the opinion of "regular readers."

Bad idea?  Or would you be game?

Let me tell you a little about the story, and you can comment below with your thoughts.

It's called See Me.  Let me tell you what this story does NOT have:
  • a mysterious bad boy (Sorry! I already gave you one of those, haha)
  • a main character who was adopted or has dubious parentage
  • a main character whose family is mostly absent
  • two or more boys who are in love with the main character
  • a sequel (it's a stand alone! They really can exist!)
Let me tell you what this story DOES have:
  • a handsome, albeit shy love interest
  • the crazy, cute, and funny best friend of the love interest
  • creepy faeries and sweet leprechauns
  • another girl who's after the love interest! *gasp*
  • a sister who's best friends with the main character and tends to stir up trouble
  • kissing  :)

Here are some fun covers made by some of my beta-readers when the story was up on Inkpop:

(This is how I see McKale)

What say you???  Yay or Nae?

My Head Is...Empty

Guys. This is weird. For the first time in four years, my head is empty. There is no story banging around. No characters shouting. No plot forking out in obscure directions (or not forking out at all and making me insane). No steamy smooching scenarios.

Nothing. And that is okay. Temporarily.

I am taking the summer off from writing. I will be reading published books, for fun, for the first time in a while. In fact, I have quite a list, and I'm looking forward to it!

But still...it's really strange not to have a story trying to work itself out in my mind. I feel slightly lost and stripped bare or something.

As far as writing goes I'm not able to devise stories at will. I cannot sit down and brainstorm or write an outline. Either the story comes to me out of nowhere and completely takes over my mind, or it doesn't. My bestie is a very prolific writer. When NA became popular she was like, "Ooh, that sounds fun! I think I want to write an NA!" And within a week she had a solid idea. I have no idea how she does that. I'm in awe.

Autumn and Cayden (not to be confused with Kaidan)

People ask me all the time to write scenes from Kai's point of view, but I can't force it. The two scenes I did write had flooded my brain long before I agreed to put them on paper. Kai wouldn't shut his sexy mouth. And I love when that happens. I really do.

The thing is, it's probably good that I don't have a story to tell at this moment. I really, really need to focus on my children this summer. They get shafted when it comes to my time. Half the time when we're together, I'm on the computer, and let's be real. I'm not paying much attention to them, and they know it. I simply do not have enough "child free" time to get all my work done (roughly 10 hours a week), so it leaks into my time with them.

One night a couple months ago, after I'd put my (then 6-year-old) daughter to bed, she came in and asked if I could lay with her a little longer. I was right in the middle of writing. Naturally I tried to tell her no. Tried to tell her I was working. And I can still remember the pained look on her face when she said, "What's more important, Mommy? Work or the people you love?"

Autumn, age 7
She really said that!! And she was serious, not trying to be manipulative as far as I could tell. It was definitely a stab to the heart. So I closed my laptop and snuggled my girl, replaying those words over and over in my head.

She's seven now. My son is four and a half. They are the only two people in the world who truly NEED me. I don't want to miss their childhood. I want this summer with them. I want to focus on every tiny detail and soak it all in while I can.

I will still be on Twitter and Facebook, answering emails and keeping in touch. I just won't be writing, blogging, or beta reading until school starts back in the fall. At that point it's my hope that a story will bombard me. Something wicked and sexy and daring and delicious. I don't want the storyboard of my mind to be blank forever. Just the next eight to ten weeks. And then Kai, or some equally hott character, can burst to life and have their way with my hands. Because I love writing for you, and I can't wait to give you more.

But for now, this is what I plan to do. Oh, and maybe I'll clean the house a bit more. I'm sure my hardworking husband would love that, lol. I don't know. We'll see.  :-)

To all my "Sweeties" out there, have a wonderful summer. Enjoy your books. Enjoy your families.

Hugs,
